Gap Inc. plans to open its first store in China next year and expand its overseas e-commerce operations, as part of a broader turnaround effort.

China is 'a market that is only going in one direction, in terms of its size,' Chief Executive Glenn Murphy said Thursday.

The San Francisco company, the largest U.S. apparel retailer by revenue, enjoyed robust growth in the 1990s as its jeans and khakis set the tone for a business-casual workplace. But Gap, which also operates Banana Republic and Old Navy, has struggled in the last decade.

Sales fell to $14.5 billion last year from $16.3 billion in 2004. In the second quarter of 2009 sales at stores open at least a year declined 8% on top of a 10% drop in the year-earlier period.

Gap will own and manage the China store, unlike in some other markets. It will use Chinese-based companies to provide some services, such as distribution.

International store sales were $2.6 billion last year, roughly 19% of the company's total store sales. U.S. online sales reached $1 billion last year.

Since joining the company in 2007 from Canadian chain Shoppers Drug Mart, Mr. Murphy has focused on tightening operations, including shrinking inventory and closing stores. Gap has seen some improvements in its sales figures in recent months, especially at Old Navy.

In September, Old Navy reported that sales at stores open at least a year increased 13% from a year earlier.

Gap said it will establish e-commerce sites in the U.K. and Canada next year, fulfilling orders from distribution centers in both of those countries rather than shipping from its U.S. warehouses. The company said it hopes to use its U.K. distribution center to ship online orders from other European Union countries in the future.
